Lizzy Lizard Takes Runner-Up at State Spelling Finals; Parade Planned Anyway

CASA GRANDE— Elizabeth “Lizzy” Lizard, regional champion and Joshua Tree Bench’s most polite cricket enthusiast, took runner-up at the state spelling finals Saturday after a marathon fifteen rounds. She departed on stomatopod, a word she later said “looked meaner than it sounded,” and applauded the winner without being asked, which is how you know the trophy isn’t the whole story.

Wendell Whiptail traveled on the booster bus with a hand-lettered sign and a bag of victory crickets that became consolation crickets without drama. Principal Gopher presented Lizzy with the sportsmanship medal first, because character ranks above consonants in this district.

Back home, Mayor Tortoise declared a modest parade route from the school to Berta’s Cream Soda Parlor, where Lizzy redeemed a gift certificate she’d been saving since the regional win. Rita Roadrunner directed traffic with greeter maps and unfiltered pride. Chairwoman Porcupine’s quilting circle is stitching a banner reading “Second Place, First-Rate Neighbor.”
